Nouran: Concept Lighting was appointed last June as lighting consultants for the facade and internal lighting design of Al Fattan Hotel, located at the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. The assignment covers all stages, from concept design and design development, to final construction documentation, tender evaluation and site supervision.

Situated in one of the most prestigious locations on Palm Jumeirah, on the right side end tip of the outer Crescent Island, this magnificent water front development consists of a luxury hotel and residence, private marina and beach club. The six storey five-star resort hotel, residences and serviced apartments, spa retreat, marina and beach club, have been designed in an elegant foliage shape, to preserve the unique spirit of The Palm.

The starting point for the facade lighting concept was the dialogue between the building and the sea. Our aim was to narrate a story, and capture the energy, dynamism and sparkle of the water surface during the night. The architectural mesh was used as a blank canvas, where hundreds of light dots recreate the eternal movement of the sea. The shape, speed and tone of the waves vary during the night, to reflect the excitement or serenity of the surroundings.

Following this same concept, the indoor lighting design scheme goes deeper, under the surface. In order to bring this idea to life, the sea colors, sun beams, reflections and marine features became the main elements to emulate. Dynamic hues of light, blue and turquoise anecdotes and organic shaped lighting fixtures evoke the underwater world.

Nouran's vast experience in hospitality lighting projects, profound sensibility towards design and deep understanding of the latest lighting trends, have been the key elements to being awarded this prestigious lighting challenge.

Main Consultant: BEAD Architects & Engineers

Nouran: Concept Lighting has finalized the facade and landscape lighting design of Mr. Sultan Al Kendi's private villa, located in Abu Dhabi.

The external volumetric arrangement, with its asymmetric geometry of straight lines, squares and rectangles, resembles a masterpiece from the De Stijl artistic movement. As lighting architects, this was our main consideration when proposing the facade lighting design scheme. Light, in terms of visual energy, was strategically located on edges, grooves and planes, to show the gesture of the different masses that compose the villa, without overlooking the functional lighting requirements.

The technical challenge consisted in combining the architecture with the lighting equipment, to give the feeling of light being emitted from within the building and not projected onto it. Special coves, slots and niches were designed to conceal the lighting fixtures and hide them from sight, stressing the visual concept of radiant objects.

The silhouette effect was a useful and creative tool to complement our overall lighting strategy. An object is backlit to appear dark against a light background, revealing the object's shape. This enables to separate subject from background, creating a deeper perception of space. In practical terms, the diffuse reflected light serves as functional light for orientation and circulation purposes.

Nouran's vast experience in private residential lighting projects, together with a deep understanding of the client's lighting requirements and architecture, have been the key elements to being appointed as lighting consultants for this exciting project.

The core concept for both the internal and lighting design of our new showroom focuses on the idea of a "lighting experience". Visitors are drawn to a virtual, physical and perceptual encounter with our lighting products and ideas.

The interior design is inspired on an industrial chic aesthetic, with a monochromatic palette of greys, but rich in textures and materials. Huge white textile walls modulate the space, creating corridors and alleys which resemble a traditional Arabic town. Surprise and discovery are the key elements ... each turn is an invitation to the unexpected. All this provides the perfect background to showcase a variety of lighting elements, from a garden bollard to the most sophisticated crystal chandelier.

As lighting professionals we believe that light can influence people's state of mind, and we decided to explore this through color. The textile walls are equipped with RGB sources and become dynamic color objects, which are capable of flooding the room with the most incredible saturated colors, changing the mood of the store in a matter of seconds.

All the above, together with the displayed lighting fixtures, can be controlled by an i-pad application developed exclusively for Nouran: Concept Lighting, which shows sketches, dimensions, reference pictures and related products of the selected item on the screen provided to our visitors.

Nouran proves once again to be one step ahead in the lighting design and architectural lighting supply industry, by combining innovative lighting design, fresh automation ideas, prime location and an outstanding selection of lighting fixtures.

Nouran Concept Lighting finalizes the facade lighting design for private villa in Al Wasl, Dubai.

Nouran Concept Lighting finalizes the facade lighting design for private villa in Al Wasl, Dubai.

Nouran Concept Lighting was invited to plan out the facade lighting and design the building's nighttime scene. The architectural elements are simple and delicately shaped to fit the scale of the elevation. The entrance stands out in the volumetric composition of three masses; the middle part embraces the visitor in a warmly lit niche, introduced by an arch frame silhouette. The entablature marks the boundary line of the red brick roof and mirrors itself around the circular medallion over the entrance. The warm accent to the medallion culminates the subtle exposure of the facade.

Narrow reflections are specular when it comes to the first floor white stone columns, and spread softly to the little sustained arches. From a generic perspective view, they are complemented by the ground level backlit-edge window frames. The outer surface emerges at the lower part gripping the explorer and inviting him to a captivating experience.

Technicalities concerning the method of reducing the undesired light were crucial to the aesthetical and after-use aspects. In terms of covelights, the LED source should not be perceived -but at very minimal angles- while their indirect effect gradates across the backdrop surface. The cornice should receive adequate wash from the surface-mounted sleek linear profiles; consequently, avoiding the over-exposure helps to maintain the presence of the villa smooth within the vicinity.

Not all the surfaces are lit, as we aimed having a balanced light / dark scheme that draws the attention through an appropriate contrast enhanced by the landscape lights.

The project featured interdisciplinary coordination which paved the way to discuss a variety of lighting solutions for executing the desired concept, in alignment with the dedicated budget and construction timeline schedule.

In 2011 Nouran's Design Team was asked to perform the Lighting Design management for a high-end private villa located in Emirates Hills, Dubai. The task covered the complete design+build process, from concept and preliminary design, to procurement and site supervision.

The construction is located in a generous plot overlooking Dubai, which was the main reason for proposing an external lighting design which would enhance the landscape area and maintain discrete lighting levels to enjoy the views. The main lighting strategies utilized were soft indirect wash along the borders (steps, flowerbeds, furniture and platforms) and accent on the natural elements. The former helps to define the general space and sub-spaces, and provides enough lighting to move comfortably in the garden. The accent lighting is placed on key plants and trees, to provide an active background and attractive focal points.

The premise for the indoor lighting design was to create a welcoming ambience, while stressing the well-designed architectural features. Ceiling coves throughout the house provide soft indirect light, which is coupled with accent light on key elements, such as artwork, furniture and functional areas. Several lighting details were developed together with the architectural team, such as wall grooves and niches, which improve the aesthetical experience. The overall effect is welcoming, functional and contemporary.

Nouran's vast experience in private residential projects, together with a deep understanding of the local procurement process, have been the key elements to being presented this prestigious lighting opportunity.

Nouran: Concept Lighting at Frankfurt's Light+Building 2012

Nouran: Concept Lighting at Frankfurt's Light+Building 2012

Several members of Nouran's staff travelled last April to Frankfurt, to participate in the Light+Building 2012 exhibition.

Every two years, the industry presents its latest innovations in the fields of lighting, electrical engineering and house and building automation at the world's leading trade fair for architecture and technology. The main theme at this Light+Building 2012 was Energy Efficiency.

Over 1500 manufacturers presented their entire spectrum of lighting technology at the same time and place. Design luminaires, technical luminaires and lamps of all kinds and for all applications, as well as a large selection of lighting components and accessories. At the fair we could see and experience the latest trends in illumination, such as media facades, shop lighting as an element of promotion and the rapid development of O-Led technology. Together with the electrical engineering and building automation segments, this generates a completely new impulse from which users can now benefit.

One of the focal points of the Energy Efficiency theme was the Digitalization of Light and Buildings. The revolutionary change in the field of information and telecommunications technology has already shown the scope of change that can be wrought by new digital applications. For buildings, this means an even higher level of comfort, and innovative solutions for creative designs, safety and security in residential and commercial buildings coupled with enormous savings in energy costs.

A second point was the idea of Buildings as a Green Power Station. Accounting for 40% of total energy consumption, the building sector has a key role to play in a successful change in the energy paradigm. An environmentally friendly and sustainable energy supply is only possible through the efficient use of renewable energies. Around 2100 manufacturers presented solutions that cut energy consumption at the same time as increasing comfort, safety and security - from LED technology, via photovoltaic and electro-mobility, to intelligent electricity usage with smart grids.

Light+Building proved once again to be at the top of the industry. This experience will surely translate into even better lighting designs and solutions for our clients.
